I put ClamAV onto our server box which runs MS Server 2003 as it is about the only free AV that I could find that would run on it.

If the laptop didn't come with an upgrade certificate you're out of luck. I don't think that they started offering free upgrades until at least July this year.

Either the programming has been very slack or you are in need of an upgrade for your computer.
I would think the former. With the increase in computer power these days programmers can get away with sloppy coding. Microsoft have learnt this the hard way since releasing Vista and now fixing it with Windows 7.
People that forward emails
October 17, 2009 by matt88
Don't you hate it when you get friends, colleagues, family forwarding viral bullshit emails. I think that knightwise had a beef about this awhile back also.
I got this email from a colleague (let's call them xxx) the other day -it was sent to all staff:
FYI
PASS THIS ON TO AS MANY PEOPLE AS YOU CAN...
This is for Australian phone numbers
REMEMBER: Mobile Phone Numbers Go Public next month.
REMINDER all mobile phone numbers are being released to telemarketing companies and you will start to receive sale calls.
YOU WILL BE CHARGED FOR THESE CALLS
Below is a link where you can enter your phone
numbers online to put an end to telemarketing calls. Don't just delete
those calls otherwise you will find that you have been signed up for
all sorts of extra services that you didn't want or know about. Like
special chimes, music etc. https://www.donotcall.gov.au/
The donotcall site is legitimate and it actually warns about this
exact email being circulated (it's a few years old and relates to
American calls).
I sent a response to xxx advising that the email was in fact false and was a "viral email".
xxx then sent me this response:
Oh gee...that's it not sending anymore e-mails.....you try to do the right thing and see what happens...gee!
Thank goodness for that – job well done I thought.
However then xxx proceeded to send another email all staff advising
not to open the first email because it contains a virus. I just cracked
up laughing, maybe I should have explained what a "viral email" is.

I see that @linx (AKA Pat) hasn't been back. Probably just a troll.
Re: Poll: Are you a Day One upgrader?
September 13, 2009 by matt88
I'm using Windows 7 RTM already. I first tried the beta version then the release candidate and found it good enough to run on my main machine.
I never went to Vista and didn't actually upgrade my Windows 98 machine to XP until after service pack 1 came out. So I usually wait a while before upgrading but in this case have found Windows 7 to be an excellent OS. I am familiar with Vista as we have it on a laptop but I have upgraded that to Win 7 also and it makes hell of a difference.

Trend Micro have been around for a long time - I have never used their products though.
I've been using Microsoft Security Essentials Beta since installing Windows 7 64 bit RTM. It seems to work really well and isn't a drain on resources.

Welcome on board Dan.
Try getting to site via a proxy server if you have to but from a if it's a home router there is something weird going on.
Could it be something wrong with your DNS server - I can't get to this site from work due to the IT kill joys

Re: Back-Up's
September 3, 2009 by matt88
In Australia the upload speeds are so useless online backups in many cases are impracticable.
My current upload speed is 256 Kbit/s (Download speed of 1500 Kbits/s) which means that it would take nearly 10 hours to upload 1GB of data.
I will soon have an upload speed of 1024 Kbit/s (Download speed of 30000 Kbits/s) which, although a 4 fold improvement not much good anyway. Particularly because my new 25GB plan will be counting uploads and downloads.
I may backup some stuff on line, photos mainly which will make a 4th source of backup for them (one being DVD's in desk drawer at work)
They're back after nearly 2 months

I've just put in for $1500 dollar education rebate. Once received, I might a netbook for the wife - something small and light. Can claim on it next financial year.

That looks good - now you have to work on an "Atmo" logo to throw on the side.

That could be a useful site - but I'd be careful what I files I use it for.

Dave, you haven't had a good mispronunciation for a while, have you been leaving them on the "cutting room floor" or have you had some elocution lessons?
Waiting for the next capartcha (captcha) to come up.

Time will tell how good Wolfram is. When people start using it more and scrutinising results we'll see how good it really is. Who knows, Google may buy it and use it as an extension to their search.
Wooly - nice search on the answer to the life the universe and everything

Dave, I hope that you put some sound proofing in when did your renovations. Particularly when recording 2Schooners.
Seano, swearing is a funny thing and I think that the inflection has a lot to do with it. I knew an Irishman who said that the swore a lot in Ireland but it was more matter of fact and clipped.
They would say fuck (sounding like fok) every fourth word, where in Aust we say faaaaaarrrrrrkkkkkkk stretching it out a lot.
I'm still banned from swearing on Twitter
