No posts received thumbs up, next time you see a good one, give some respect and thumb it up.
You may be able to direct VirtualBox as to where the VHD for your system is stored. That way you may be able to run it "off the USB stick" without all the mess. You'd have to beware of the "limited" life cycle of the flash memory though and not use it constantly for 5 years. :P
I went on holidays since I put up my wish list. Now I'm saving up to pay my credit card bill instead of for the new system. :P
Now that its been released and I can run it on my Win7 installation I'm using the MS Security Essentials pack. Essentially a full-blown virus scanner baked right into Windows. Seems to do the job well enough, but I haven't run the system long enough to know how good it is at catching things.
Before that I, like others among you, was a dedicated Avast user. Still have it on my Windows XP VMs... :)
It's hard to go off topic when you're the AGP. Nothing is off topic... especially during the break. :P
@wadehindell I can't believe any of that either.
Me, I'm saving up for a few things:
1. A new system. Core i7 desktop, 12 GB memory, 4x1TB hard disks
2. A new 22" monitor to go with said system (to match the 22 I've already got)
On the wish list, but not in the short term
3. Re-do the house for whole-home automation
4. Cooled server-closet :D
Lots of good examples in the LH post too. 10 different DIY laptop stands. For the moment I have a stack of books much like the one above. Mostly stuff I don't read anymore. hehe...
Great discussion, guys. First and foremost I'd like to thank you all for the kind words about the show, and about the community.
Community building is really important to Dave, and the rest of the AGP hosts. The quality and level of engagement that we have with you guys is one of the things that sets the AGP apart from a great number of podcasts in the tech space, and otherwise.
With respect to @seano's discussion of Leo specifically, I have a few thoughts:
First off, I love Leo's work. He has a huge degree of credibility in the tech space with TWiT and the TWiT network (and even to some degree the TWiT army). He's been able to use his influence and his larger-than-life persona to gather together experts on a great number of tech topics -- Paul Thurotte for Windows Weekly, Steve Gibson for Security Now and Amber MacArthur for Net@Nite just to name a few. A number of these folks have been working with Leo for years and owe their start in the tech media industry to his work, and thought leadership in this space since the mid to late 1990s.
I can speak, to some degree at least, for the other hosts on the show as well when I say that we have a great deal of respect for Leo, for what he's accomplished, and for the community that he's been able to assemble around him.
With regard to the perceived "quality" of his community interaction, it's a completely different ballgame than we're playing here at the AGP. At last count, Leo has 14 shows on the TWiT network, and manages to publish weekly on most of them. This production schedule for his shows, each of which attracts a rather large audience (many times the size of the AGP) means that there are tens of thousands of regular listeners and viewers for his content. It just isn't physically possible for him to have the same kind of contact with each and every person. He can, and does reply to "non-elites" but the sheer volume of tweets and emails would necessitate that many go un-replied to.
A final difference between the AGP and the TWiT network is that TWiT and the associated corporate ventures are a business for Leo. He makes his living producing media for people to consume. For that, he needs to be able to put ads in the content that's presented. While I may not agree with the format in which those ads are added, their length or their frequency, there's nothing to stop me from fast-forwarding through them.
The bottom line is that there's tons of content out there, and for the most part podcasters aren't competing with each other for listeners. For advertisers? Maybe; but because of the time-shifted and asynchronous nature of podcasts and other Internet media, the need to beat-out other shows in Prime Time is gone. People can listen to whatever they want, whenever they want. And thank god for that.
So hopefully that clears up some of our "Leo bashing". We really do try to target our comments at the content, and at the behaviours as much as possible. At the end of the day, if we don't like something about a show that Leo has produced, it's unlikely to have any effect on the respect that we have for him, and for everything he has accomplished.
I have to say, BlueHost has been pretty good for us since we moved in last year. For all my non-AGP stuff, I've been with DreamHost since 2005.
All shared hosting providers have their difficulties. Dreamhost had a virtual melt-down a few years ago when the Los Angeles power grid was stretched to the breaking point. When you pay $8 a month for hosting, you will get what you pay for. :P
As for hosting privacy, DH also anonymizes all domains that you register with them for free if you have a hosting account. :)

To get the CMS/blog piece done something like WordPress or Joomla are good choices. There are extensions for these (like bbPress) which can provide you with built-in forums. WP will also allow you to have people register for the site so that they have accounts for bbPress.
I agree with Cait about the SocialNetwork thing -- but there is an extension for the multi-user edition of WordPress which allows a basic social network to be built. The extension is BuddyPress.

As for hosting, I use DreamHost. They've been pretty good and provided me the support I've needed for the past couple years.

It's up! It's up!!

4:19 worth of bloopers at the end. Dave, this one's for you!
Dave doesn't have to worry about my editing skillz... I'm just good at splicing together audio for bloopers... And I said I'd find the jeopardy theme, I just hope Merv Griffen doesn't try to sue. :P
This is why we have the best listeners. :D
I think I'm crazy, 'cause September (and it looks like October) is a crazy month for me at work, so what do I do? Oh, lets learn to edit a podcast! and for October? Let's do another podcast in addition to the AGP! :P
Ah well, I love this stuff... it's an easy way for me to get my thoughts in the wild and tame Dave's grammar at the same time. ;)
Thanks all.
In the near term, Chrome will hit Firefox harder simply because FF users have already proven themselves to be open to trying multiple browsers. On my Mac, I have three, on my windows machine I have 5
(FF, Safari, Flock) (IE,FF,Opera,Flock,Chrome)
Praise the deity of your choice. VLC lives!
@sighko time to try out Ubuntu? might run a bit quicker, and VLC should run beautifully...
For the record... a Mac is a PC. :P
One day we'll have to do an OS Poll:
XP
Vista
Tiger
Leopard
Ubuntu
Fedora
Solaris
Other
But I suppose we could just check our web stats too... lol
My iPod touch (yes, the one I lost somewhere in the midwestern US that some lucky f*ckr is using to watch all of my (implied) porn collection) was jailbroken within 25 minutes of it being opened. It made the device WAAAAAAAAAY more useful. The app store will really cut down on the "need" to jailbreak the touch (and iphone), but if I can't get an app to work, or if Apple start's going all "big brother" and locking down the app store to only stuff they think we should use (like getting rid of podcaster) I'll jailbreak my next one.... which is coming... I hope... in a month or so.
@Blogslut "We also spell proper"
We all spell proper in some manner or another but -- oh wait... you meant "We also spell PROPERLY." :P
@KW Of Course! What kind of geek would I be if I didn't take advantage of my temporary position of "God of the Show"?! :P
Awesome comments guys, I've got a tear in my eye... oh wait that's just some salt from dinner.
@KW lemme know if you wanna collaborate on some new bumpers... I've proven that GarageBand can handle short stuff. :P
@Doug: Not sure if you've tried it yet, but my favourite Mac podcast is MacOSKen(.com). Focuses a bit more on the business side of the news... but it's a nice short show.
I tend to agree with Knightwise. Keep in mind that the link in Google could have been picked up from someone's blog, or some other location, and probably wasn't the intended download link that AVG wanted to show up in Google.
This just goes to Dave's point on an episode we did about privacy on "that other show": Google has a very long memory.
From what I've heard now listening to talk radio shows (from a completely different perspective now that I'm podcasting) professionals seem to take a second or two of dead air and collect their thoughts before launching into their next thought. Dead air would be something relatively easy to automatically eliminate by looking for volume below a certain decibel range.
One of my favourites is "cache", though I suspect it's not a mispronunciation so much as the Aussie accent that causes Dave to say "cayshe"... ;)
And I'm not really picking on Dave, much, I try to select the screwups that will be funniest. Most of mine are me getting lost in a sentence resulting in dead air... not much fun to listen to.
Cait's thing is a long uhhhh... at the beginning of a thought. :P
