When looking for a large screen monitor, what should we be looking for?
These days, the price of larger TFT LCD displays is falling. We can now find 24" displays for as little as $400 CDN ($310 US, $500 AUS, £210, €248, 6 million popsicle sticks). While 24" seems to be about the right size for most techie/gamer users, there is a lot of variation between the different manufacturers.
My primary usage would be graphic design and photography, my secondary usage would be general computing and gaming. I would also like to watch movies on it on occasion.
I am currently looking at the Samsung 24" Widescreen LCD Monitor, model 2493HM. Specs follow;
Mfr. Part Number: LS24KIEEFV/XAA
Monitor Type: Flat Panel
Analog vs Digital: HDMI, DVI-D, VGA
Brightness: 400cd/m2
Built in TV Tuner: No
Contrast Ratio: 10000:1
Maximum Resolution: 1920 x 1200
Other: HDCP Compliant (HDMI, DVI-D)
Product Dimensions: 56.50(W) x 44.75(H) x 25.00(D) cm
Product Weight: 8.5 kg
Response Time: 5ms
Also pluses with this particular unit are two ~4W down-facing hidden speakers, an adjustable stand that can move up, down, tilt and change from portrait mode to landscape mode, two USB 2.0 ports, and low power consumption when in standby mode. This unit can also be mounted on a wall.
The first thing I ask myself is, "What does all this mean?"
Some of the important things to me are, the inputs, the contrast and the resolution. Response time will also be important for things like games and movies. Also very important to me is the colour gamut, and does this monitor display colours correctly. Colour is very important for both graphic design and photography.
So anyway, I thought it would be nice to have a discussion about what technical specifications should one be looking for when comparing and pricing TFT LCD monitors.

Re: Twitter Lists open to abuse?

You could block and then unblock someone, but that can be troublesome. Twitter should've added some sort of opt-out for lists and/or the ability for people to remove themselves from lists similar to what you can do on Facebook.
(Hrm... apparently I'm a "Superstar" now... whatever than means!)

I also have a 60GB transfer cap on my Internet account and I couldn't imagine uploading 450 GB of data into "the cloud," it would murder my cap rate. I don't even know offhand how much they charge me for every GB above 60...I think the most I've ever used in a month is 12 GB.

Geeze indeed! I think if you compare the AGP to a lot of similar podcasts, you'll find the AGP sound quality much superior. The AGP is not your "Leo Laporte" TWiT podcast. Dave does not have the thousands of dollars of equipment that those types of shows have, but neither does Dave have the corporate sponsorships that those shows do. For a show done by a couple of blokes and a she-geek I'd say that the AGP is head and shoulders above the next major competitor! I feel bad when I send my audio comments into the AGP because my mic is crap compared to what Dave uses. I think Dave does a great job of keeping the audio quality high and the file sizes managable--we're not listening to Beethoven's 5th here, it's a frickin podcast!
In any case, you're getting it for free! What more can you ask for?
Re: Poll: Are you a Day One upgrader?
September 13, 2009 by herne
I dunno, if I had a major product that had to sync with another major product, I think I would test it quite extensively before I released a new OS, but that's just me. Apple really "Microsofted" when they screwed up the iPhone sync. They also screwed up when they didn't include Flash 10 with the OS--they updated it in 10.6.1, but c'mon!
I was going to purchase Snow Leopard, but I don't generally install anything new on the day it comes out, I usually wait for a couple weeks until some of the bugs appear and have to be dealt with.
In this case, Mac OS Snow Leopard has dropped support for the PowerPC product line--All of the redundant programming needed to run programs on the PowerPC have been stripped out of the OS. This is great if you're running all of the newest software, but in the "real world" people usually are not running the newest software. In the "business world," a lot of companies are still 3 or 4 versions behind. This is the case for me--many of my clients are still running Adobe Creative Suite version 1, some more are running CS2, and very few are running CS3. (Hell, some of them are still using QuarkXPress!) Mac Snow Leopard doesn't support CS1 or CS2, it also doesn't support Suitcase Fusion 12.1.7, the font management program I use. So that means I can't afford to upgrade to Snow Leopard until I can get my Clients to upgrade their systems. So at "normal" rates, that'll probably mean about 3 years from now.
Maybe if I was rich I could have a couple of iMacs, one running OS Tiger so I could use my OS9 legacy programs, one running OS Leopard, and one running OS Snow Leopard... but I'm not rich.

@wade I don't leave any of my external HDs on for long periods of time. Once I've backed up, I shut it down. I don't believe that externals need to be running all the time that the computer is running.
Was trying to decide if I wanted to splurge and buy a 1TB Time Capsule.

Haven't upgraded yet. Was trying to get my iMac backed up before I installed the OS updates which includes Safari, Quicktime, iTunes, etc. Procrastination FTW!
Also trying to decide if it's worth it to pay $5 US to upgrade my iPod software. It kinda annoys me that I have to PAY for the upgrade...
I can't upgrade my OS to Snow Leopard because I need to be able to use Adobe CS2 and Snow Leopard does not support it...

How ya goin', Dan?! Nice to see another AGP-lovin person!
If you like AGP, you should also check out the 2Schooners podcast with Dave and James Williams. It's a hoot. Just go to www.2schooners.com or search for "2Schooners" in iTunes.

I don't own a mobile phone, nor do I own a car. We have universal health care here in Ontario, but you end up waiting for a lot of things. You pay into the health care plan depending on your income bracket, I think I pay $450 a year (and I haven't used it in about 20 yrs). We have to pay our own dental and eye care though, I have coverage through work for dental, drugs, and various other things.
I would like to purchase the new Canon 7D for myself for Xmas, but doesn't look good. I might get myself a big flatscreen TV and a PS3 instead, probably cheaper.

Saw GAMER recently. Good concept, but the movie was a bit over the top in some places (posted a review over on my blog).
Want to see Surrogates, it looks interesting. So does Sherlocke Holmes.
Zombieland looks stupid.

Films? They still have films these days? ;P
Lately I've seen; GI Joe, District 9, and Harry Potter...
Probably going to go see Gamer on Monday or late next week, depends on my mood.

I can't see backing up online... Then your data is in someone else's hands and you never know what they're gonna do with it. Despite what they promise.
I bought a 1TB Lacie that I'm gonna backup to very shortly... and I back up my most important files to DVD.

I should get around to doing another audio comment sometime...

You aren't alone. I don't own a cell phone either.
Even the pay-as-you-go plans here will cost you $200 a year, even if you never use the phone, plus you have to BUY the phone. So $50 for the cheapest phone (no camera, no MP3s, no nothin), plus when you buy a $15 credit, they expire it after 45 days. Which is kinda sucky.

Geez... my condo only cost me about $180k for nearly 1000 sq ft. The condo fees are a bit more than I wanted to spend, but it includes everything except Internet and phone... and I rent my parking space out, which pays for my Internet, so I'm only paying extra for phone! Go me!

I was looking at one at the Apple store and they wanted somethin like $70 for what amounted to a couple pieces of Lexan and a coat hanger. I need to check out one of the office supply places to see what they have, I guess. IKEA should build something for this!

Just purchased a 2.93 Ghz 24" iMac... Would enjoy a Drobo, but I think I'll be looking for something cheaper in a NAS drive instead.
Maybe I can save up enough to find another girlfriend? ... Nah!
(Oh, and paying my mortgage.)

Hey Rob... It's still coming!
All of the hosts have been very busy lately--Dave has been busy at work and fighting some floods down his way. Cait's been without a computer for a few weeks. And Keith was pretty busy wrapping up his school year--he just graduated today, in fact.
I would imagine Dave would have a better idea of the "when," but I would guess that the answer would be "soon."
Oh, and welcome to the AGP Forums!
