First up audio books are tops. Mattoid mentioned that he had just discovered them but that the DRM thing was a bitch. BUT I am happy to say that not all audio books are DRM'ed and you don't have to pay for them!
Thought I might post a few resources that I have used for sourcing audio books in the past, I am sure the rest of you will have a heap more to add.
Podiobooks: awesome service with audio books presented like a subscription in the form of a podcast. You listen at your own pace and set the speed. I love this service. Your not going to find the latest and greatest well known authors but there are some real gems there.
EscapePod Podcast: Great podcast that features different stories and books, all science fiction. Weekly episodes featuring an author and read well. Been around for ages. I first found this one not that long after I discovered podcasts. Before I started podcasting myself. All the episodes are Creative Commons as well ![]()
Also don't forget that there are a bunch of audio books on iTunes and they have their own category.
Also check out LibriVox for classic public domian books.
Be great to see what else people come up with. Thanks for the inspiration for the post Mattoid and I hope that puts you onto a few more sites and services for ausio books that are free and come without DRM.
Check out www.scottsigler.com for free Horror/Sci-Fi book podcasts. I think he also has books on Podiobooks. Check out Earthcore and Ancestor.
I was listening to another book called "TableRappers" but it looks like the author is behind on his podcasts lately.
Wow Dave...A time BEFORE you were podcasting? I don't believe that place ever existed :P
Thanks heaps for the suggestions, every one of those links is sitting in my Tree-Style-Tabs sidebar waiting to be checked out after I finish writing this.
I realize that audiobooks are not for everyone, just like podcasts. I find that I am blessed in the sense that I work 12.5hr shifts where all I can really do is listen, listen to podcasts like the AGP and audiobooks, finishing all 9hrs of What Would Google Do, by Jeff Jarvis in one shift (and then proceed to re-listen to it a few more times). If anyone is reading this, my meandering, baseless thoughts, and hasn't, repeat, HAS NOT read/listened to or otherwise consumed in its entirety, WWGD by Jeff Jarvis, stop wasting your time on my words and enlighten yourself with his....no but seriously, it is THE best books I've consumed in many years. Insightful, elegant and awesome.
***sry about the plug there, i promise Jeff Jarvis IS NOT paying me***
ok, i've got some hot links in the sidebar that are going cold, gotta run. before i do, i know we all squeam at DRM but, check out Audible.com. Their prices are fairly reasonable and they have an immense selection (including...you guessed it, WWGD).

Great suggestions and links guys. It's funny when I think about audio books that 'books on tape' spring to mind. I remember seeing them at the library when I was a kid. Do you remember audio cassette tapes........

You have to appreciate that back in the day there A: was no choice and B: it was the bleeding edge! In perspective they are going to be saying the same thing about Magnetic HD's now in 20 years time, of that I am absolutely positive.
The other thing is that we would not be where we are now without what we had then :P
But yeah you would be mad to even contemplate using it now.
Some of my audiobooks ask me to turn the tape around halfway through a chapter. I wonder where those came from?
