I had a question I might throw out - it seems like an easy answer I just don't have enough apple knowledge to help.
Hardware
iPhone 3G
MacBook Pro
How do you use the iPhone 3G as a tether for the MacBook Pro for on the road connectivity? Is there an app that will handle this easier? The account is an at&t account.
I am asking help from you guys - cause I have a co worker who wants to know also I would like to know to build my knowledge base..
It's not official yet. You'd have to jailbrake for now.
Or just get the ATT E71 in April and buy the joikuspot premium app.
oh damn that sucks. I wonder why. You can easily do this on a Blackberry or even my regular phone I did it. (got the stupid Verizon wireless website that offered to connect me for $65 -bastards! Said something like "We're glad you're interested in using mobile broadband, now pay me..."
I mean, I can get on to mobile web, so why cant I just download some paket data you pricks!?
hahahah.
that's what you get for buying the car at the gas station.
j/k
honestly, i expect the iphone has battery life issues.
they give you a five 5GB cap and expect you to use nothing. charging more for tethering is unscrupulous. I'm only eating a gig a month on my E71, why not let me rollover the data? Anyway. They'll never know I have joikuspot installed.
:-)
I doubt it's blocked on the G1.
Also watch tethering any laptop on your phone, some carriers charge extra (yes, that makes no sense, but true).
I'm writing this dressed in a bear's pelt. Outside is my mammoth, saddled for my daily commute.
Why am I dressed like a cave person? Well, you see. I'm the last person on Earth to not actually have a cell-phone. This simple fact dates me at around the stone age.
It's not that I don't want a phone, but from the very start those telco contracts have seemed to me like the worst kind of one sided strangle hold. They demand a two year commitment and a fancy voice and data plan, but step one foot over a national border and they send a bill that would require a second mortgage on your house.
They charge more for a megabyte of data trafic, than NASA charges per gram of equipment launched into orbit. http://www.howstuffworks.com/space-elevator.htm
You aren't alone. I don't own a cell phone either.
Even the pay-as-you-go plans here will cost you $200 a year, even if you never use the phone, plus you have to BUY the phone. So $50 for the cheapest phone (no camera, no MP3s, no nothin), plus when you buy a $15 credit, they expire it after 45 days. Which is kinda sucky.
Mobile is a joke in North America
I did not get one until 2005 when I had a lady on the other side of the SF Bay.
btw - I am pretty sure you can install the iPhone 3G/3GS tethering bundle on OS 3.0.0 and as it runs over USB there's no battery issue.
I /heard/ the SMS patch killed tethering.
I'm now on a 15$/month data plan with a 5GB cap... teeheeeeeee

I tethered for free until I sold my E71 two days ago.
