Hi Guys

Was cruising through my frequent flyer points and discovered to my great delight that i can grab a new IPOD.

The options i have to me are:
1. 16gb Ipod nano
2. 120 gb Ipod classic
3. 16gb Ipod touch
4. Zune (just kidding)

I mainly listen to music and podcasts, but would like the ability to put videos on for long haul flights etc.

All comments appreciated.

Cheers

George

Depends on a few things, How much music do you currently have in your library or CD's if you haven't reiiped them.

If you want to watch movies I would get the Touch for the bigger screen but then it also restricts how much music and podcasts you can listen to. I manage ok with my Touch but I also swap around music occasionally instead of filling it up all the time.

If you have a gazillion tons of music and you want it all at your fingr tips get the classic and that should also allow you to have movies albeit on a smaller screen and resolution.

I would agree with BlogSlut - it depends on how much music you have or think you might get. If at all possible get something that can hold all your music in one swoop - otherwise you'll be stuffing round with playlists and that is a bitch.

Video on the touch is going to be better without a doubt. Just check up with someone that has used it for such for long periods - the battery life on the iPhone starts to become a problem with lots of video watching. But that might just be the iPhone.

For features and bling the touch is your thing as well. You can also load games and apps and crap like that. But until the touch gets a bit larger in capacity I would get the classic - IF I had to get it now. If you can hold out for a bit this might change and make a big difference to your decision making process.

Anyone know what the touch is like for battery consumption with video?

I never understood why anyone would want to watch video on such a tiny screen, although I was surprised at how clear webpages appear on the iPod touch. Still, it would become very tiring very quickly to try to watch a movie on it.

I have a 5th gen 80 GB "Video" iPod that contains my entire CD collection... I don't think I've every watched video on it. Hell, I don't think I've even put photos on it except to test it.

I'll quote Borat on this one:

Then sell on craigslist and wait for android PMPs... meanwhile earning interest.

I'm sure the touch is great for video but you can only fit roughly 15 lossless albums, but who does lossless anyway?

Me, but I'm on a lowly 8GB.

I worry the touch is ridiculously fragile.

How many points do they all cost? Current dollar prices from the Apple Store are:

16GB Nano - $279
120GB Classic - $339
16GB Touch - $419
Zune - Currently out of stock

Divide the points by the price and get the one that's the best value.

Or as everyone else has said - good video and stuff to play with on the Touch, and ginormous storage on the Classic. The previous advantage of the Nano that it supported the Nike+ thing has disappeared as the Touch now also does.

Tom, thanks for the suggested comparison methodology, turns out it works out between 155 and 151 points her dollar across the range, thus, it now boils down to which is best, as they are all pretty much the same value.

And to the other that have offered suggestions, many thanks, i think im leaning towards the classic.

Go for the iTouch - then at least you will be able to read this forum when you have wifi connectivity whilst listerning to your fav tunes.

I'd for the 120GB Classic - I bought one at the new year, and I love it.

Then again, I'm one of those people who just have to have all their music with them wherever they go. I mean, who knows what you might want to listen to?

But, it's all about the features you want - seeing as you want video my first thought would be to get something with more space, but then again you might want to surf the internet on it as well (a feature I'd very rarely use).

Sigh.  Everyone hates on my poor poop-colored Zune, and all it does is whatever I ask it to.
I'll stand up for you, Zune!
I got my wife a nano for Christmas, so of course I had to put the music on it for her, as she's not interested in that kind of thing, and I will say that I prefer the Zune software to iTunes - I had much worse luck with iTunes properly identifying songs and albums - ended up having to do a lot more adjustments to get the songs on the right albums, get the right artwork, etc, than I've experienced with my Zune software.
Anyway, back to your regularly scheduled discussion of iPods.

I honestly would've got a Zune if they actually sold them in Australia.

Don't get an iPod - get anything else.  I pods are just eye candy and iTunes is a piece of shit (ever tried taking something off an iPod using Apple software, can't be done).

Hmmmm, totally disagree with you there Matt. The iPod itself is easy and intuitive to use - I challenge you to name an MP3 player with a better interface.  Haven't ever used a Zune (they aren't available in Aus), but other ones I've seen have been absolutely tedious to use.  As for iTunes - what else do you want it to do?  Putting stuff on and taking off is as simple as clicking and dragging a playlist - or if you go for the Gazillion GB version you don't need to bother - just sync your entire library.  I guess if they were just eye candy and a piece of shit then they wouldn't have sold quite as many as they have!

I am with Tom... Oh and we got your rant Matt thanks mate :)

But the iPod and Apple devices are really easy to use. BTW I think you can actually do what you were trying to do using the software but you have to know how. Not something that people usually want to do. This is one way of doing it but there are others:

http://www.apple.com/support/ilife/tutorials/itunes/it7-2.html

You would not have lost the music so long as you do not sync the iPod - because with no music in iTunes it syncs alright - and makes the iPod have nothing on it also. Think of iTunes as the source - change the source and you change what's on the iPod.

As long as all the files are backed up - just reinstall onto the same computer and make them available in iTunes and NP your off again...

I have used both an iPod an iPhone and another device that's not based on iTunes and the device not using iTunes sucked arse bacause it was a pita to sync it and keep things current - especially podcasts.

Sorry but I am a PC and I love iTunes and Apple devices. The iPhone has changed the way that I do things forever.

Thanks for the link Dave, I've already set iTunes to manual so that I can drag and drop things in and out.

The weird thing is, I have had trouble getting iTunes to re-import (re-find) all of the music and videos that I have put back into the iTunes folder.  I might have another go later to see if I can sync it up.

In regards to the iPod being intuitive and easy to use once things are loaded maybe it is for some.  I currently use an old Sandisc 1GB which I sync manually - using it mainly for podcasts and the radio.
