Hey guys, as you know our previous home was The Podcast Network where we were known as The Global Geek Podcast. You might have heard that TPN lost all it's content from shows old and new recently due to hard disk failure.

Basically, I can't see them either A. wanting to or B. able to rebuild the old website. So the only thing that I can then conclude is that the GGP website will be no more.

In some ways this is a sad loss for myself as there was a great repository of information, content and sites, app and services that I used regularly as a resource. It was also the place that you could find all the old shows.

Unfortunately this is to be no more. Yes we did back up the content and we have that on file. but from the web it is gone. We do have all the old shows backed up and available on request. So while you can't find these on the web anymore we have them. So if you know the name or specific episode number and you want it - let us know and we can get it to you one way or another.

Otherwise, bye bye Global Geek :(

Bummer.

Did you keep a record of the show notes as well? If so, it wouldn't be difficult to rebuild on another server (I could even host it if necessary).

I found this out the other night too when I went looking for old episodes...

Google has a bunch of stuff cached, you could probably pick up the show notes from there. I don't know if you'd want to host 90 episodes of GGP though, imagine the bandwidth!

I thought it would be fun to go back and listen to the first 10 episodes or something...

We have all the content both the show notes and episodes. However, I don't think that we have any intentions of making these available on the Internet again. If people want a specific episode then they can give us a shout.

Herne, as far as hosting - Blue Host are now offering unlimited bandwidth and disk space - so that would not be a problem :)

Wow that's unfortunate. I've only been listening since 001 of AGP, but I guess you guys are moving forwards anyway.

@Dave I'm always leery of the word "unlimited" in regards to space and bandwidth. It generally means that you get a "very big number" of space, but it does not follow the definition of "unlimited."

Also, in regards to bandwidth, it could just mean that when you get to a certain point they'll just start prioritizing bandwidth so that your servers get less and less of it...

Never been trustful of promises of "unlimited" anything...

Unlimited should generally be viewed as "much more than any average site is likely to ever use". There's always something in the fine print of the terms of service about suspending service for doing anything that could cause interruptions for other users on the server (assuming it's shared hosting) but it does prevent being hit with a large bill for transferring more data than the hosting plan allows per month.

My host also has "unlimited" storage/bandwidth, but the old limits were 350GB/3TB per month, which would have been enough to have 1000 people a month download the entire 90 odd episodes of the GGP (estimating that if each show was around 30mb, 90 shows would be around 2.7GB).

Still, when it comes to virtual hosting, storage and bandwidth are realitively cheap and easy enough to upgrade when necessary. It's things like CPU and I/O performance that are harder, and cost more, to scale with growth.

I always thought "unlimited" referred to the amount of money Tel$tra would charge you in hidden costs rather than the amount of data you could download. ;)

As for the GGP... next year you should release GGP001 in the AGP feed as a Christmas Special! :)

I checked out Blue Host rather thoroughly and there is no "fine print" but atmo is right when he says that even before when there were limits they were insane and very generous. Much much more then we would ever need and if we needed more then we would have the traffic to be able to get dedicated servers. We are a way from that I can tell you.

I don't know if the world would be ready for episode 1... seriously if it wasn't for the crappy co-host that I had I might just do it. But that guy was embarrassing in the extreme...

Tom I think you are right with the Telstra charges but then you guys would not go doing things like using them as an isp right...

Ha ha, nope. They keep on calling me up to sell me their latest "great rate on BigPond broadband" but they don't have much to say for themselves when I tell them I'm getting twice as much data for half the price with iiNet. :)
