Starting this thread after the replay from Tom and Eric here:

http://aussiegeeks.lefora.com/2008/12/16/what-do-you-want-for-christmas/2140606/

Personally I don't seem to have many apps at all but I'll kick it off:

Oz Weather: Awesome weather app, very slick and good to look at - best feature is the radar

Twitterific: Good twitter client but seriously thinking of looking at an alternative. While good it doesn't track your directs or replies. Still clean and simple and it works.

Evernote: Evernote app for the iPhone. Nice app. Great way to store notes and photos on the go. Web and desktop client as well. Everything syncs together very nicely.

BrightKite: iPhone app of the same nature as the web based service. Location based status app. Theoretically find others near you to catch up and have coffee or something - I liked the idea and the app is well done.

tvGuide: Just as it says. Gives you what's on the box. Cool thing is that it also covers PayTV. Only gripe is that the scrolling could be smoother. Nice to be able to turn the phone and have the guide present in a different format.

WifiTrack: Finds any and all wireless access points. Picks up ones that the phone can't or won't as well. Tells you lots of great stuff about these points including MAC address, channel, encryption and signal strength. You can also join open networks. Lists points from best to worst. Great app!

That's about it for me. Post yours!

@Dave OzWeather looks good, but it takes its data from the same place PktWeather does, and PktWeather also has a radar, so I'm not going to spend a few $$s on it. I wish there was a try-before-you-buy option - even for a few dollars I'm too tight! :)

Twitterific suits my needs mostly as I don't twitter a great deal, but it's annoying that it opens up at the oldest one first and you have to scroll all the way to the top.

@Tim A lot of those I've tried and deleted... Urban Spoon looked great, really liked the interface - does it have Aussie content yet? Next time I'm in the States I'll redownload it!

Does 1Password do anything exciting on the iPhone? Does it actually fill in web forms or does it just keep hold of your details?

@Eric I'm an RTM fan too - the iPhone website was good, but the app is so much easier to use, love it.

@Frank - Fake a Call sounds fantastic... I'll have to download that! :)

I have been trying more apps the last week.

Nothing amazing yet but it's fun to play with a new platform.

Strands had nothing to do with mystrands.... mybad!

craigsphone is handy
i could not get wifi discover or air sharing to work on my FON. going to try again on my 802.11n AP.
im+ lite does not seem to do anything, which is strange b/c shape services apps seem to work on S60.
I'm really annoyed I cannot background safari.
I prefer "Movies" to i.tv
Installed cooliris, which was piclens in firefox way back in the GGP days.
A lot of apps seems like widgets. amazon, ebay... so forth
I love simplify media.
I can connect my E71 to ATT 3G and the touch to my E71 wifi so I can stream on the go thanks to joikuspot.

Oh, sometimes the "screenshot" method of pretending the UI is snappy is really painful.

Hey same here Eric. After seeing all the apps that everyone else had I went searching for my own to add.

Twitelater Pro: twitter client. Had to get something other than twitterific, I was missing too many @replies. It is an awesome app and 5 stars from me. Features to the wharzoo. Plus I got a response from the developer in about 2 seconds. Top twitter client on the iPhone and kicks twitterific all over the ball park.

Darkness: more a curiosity app. Tells you the exact sunrise and sunset times and moon phases for any location and custom ones. Just handy and I like that sort of thing.

Mobile Fotos: dedicated flickr client. Excellent! Every other app I looked at supported multiple services and lacked in features. This is great. I am getting crap loads of stuff to flickr easily and quickly. It does just about everything you would want to do on any other platform. No stats but for something this good I don't care. (Thanks Tim!!!)

Pixelpipe (deleted): I tried this app in my search for the one above. It does a good job but it is really an app to give you the ability to post images from your iPhone to multiple services and not just flickr. It would be the pick of this type of app but not the thing I was looking for.

Spawn: A just for fun app born out of finding something that I can let the kids play with and not break something. Basically a bunch of flying fireworks type lights flying round the screen that respond to touching the screen. They will follow your finger or change direction. You can also make the dots bigger and smaller, change colour and speed and make them explode. Perfect for the kids and fun to waste a bit of time.

Also thinking of Koi Pond for the kids. Also thinking of a conversion app called Conversion: it is an aussie app and will come in handy. There are some cheaper ones but I like the look of it and the fact that I am happy to support Aussie devs.

Meanwhile the search goes on :)

Long time no hear from me but had to join in this discussion....

1. Palringo...I prob use this app more than any other on a daily basis. It's an IM client but doesn't support Skype. I use it at work to chat with friends that are online when I should be working.

2. Twitterific...Twitter obviously. One of main reasons I got an iPhone was to use Twitter after it was blocked my net nazis at work. Don't use it a lot anymore.

3. Brain Tuner.. Just a lil app that throws you some simple maths questions and have to do them as fast as possible. Just a quick thing but not bad, maybe a good one for the kids Dave.

4. IGN...basically game reviews from IGN network.

5 Light...Again self explanatory and some people may think it's a waste but has helped me a lot when we have had blackouts, much easier to negotiate stairs in the dark.

6. Morocco... An othello style game which basically i suck at.

7. Lightsaber...I hope I don't need to explain this.

8. Remote...If you have a mac, apple TV or really anything you should have this.

9. Tris... tetris style game, haven't played it much

10. Twinkle..another twitter client that I don't use much but has more geo-location features

11. 1Password..I have a 1Password account so why not.

12. Tap Tap Revenge...GH/RB kind of game...yea I also suck at it.

13. Cubes Lite...another game with matching squares to destroy a cube. More squares you get more points you get. Not abad game for filling in time.

14. eReader..read ebooks..which i don't.

15. Netnewswire...Dosen't everyone have this. if you use it as your feed reader on your machine you shuld have this. I read a lot of feeds on the train home.

16. Pocketpedia...iPhone app for all my desktop based pedia apps. Sync all your CD's, books and music to it.

17. Melodis Dialer...Voice dialler that actually understans Aussie accent. Works pretty good.

18. Air Sharing...Enables you to move files between your mac and iPhone..portable storage basically. haven't used it much tho.

19. Coin Toss...Don't have a coin handy. Just slide finger up screen fast and wait to see if it's heads or tails.

20. Pro Football...Updates scores and also live updating of games...NFL of course.

21. Worldwiki.. Nice little app that has lots of world facts about diff countries. very handy when you just can't remember what the capital of some country is.

22. AU Postcodes..Lists all the Aussie postcodes. can come in handy.

23. Metro Syd..Train Timetables for Cityrail.

24. pkt Weather...Great weather app and has radars. I think

25. Cricket...Great app if your a cricket follower. Pulls feeds from Cricinfo and does the live ball by ball updates. Another app I use a lot when on train home to follow game until stumps.

26. Urbanspoon..haven't used it much but it does have support for Sydney at least.

These next few I only added tonight so haven't tested fully yet...

27. Facebook..I logged on to facebook today using safari on my phone, maybe this will be easier.

28. Fring..haven't tested yet.

29 Google Earth.. If you don't know what this does...where have you been.

30. iHandy Level...why not..just for the record my table is 0.8 degrees from being flat.

31. Last.fm...had a quick trial of this and worked great with wi-fi. haven't tested under 3g, will try that tomorrow at work. Yes I created a US account but not just for this.

32. Shazam..music recognition software, haven't really tested it yet but it's supposed to work well.

33. Trism...Everyone one raves about this game. had a quck game and is stangely compelling.

34. WiFinder...maybe I can find some open wifi points near work.

35. Aurora Feint...almost forgot this one. Interesting RPG tetris game.

Obviously I don't have all of this installed on my iPod Touch as it doesn't have net connection but I have all on iPhone. That's all for now and I am pretty sure they are all free apps. Always willing to add more apps :)

As a follow up Last.fm seems to be working great on 3G. maybe I will use up all that bandwidth I am paying for now. Only issue is my iPod speakers don't support iPhone and won't charge it, that's a bummer.

I installed WhoopieCushion.

:-(

and webex.

Guess I need a headset to test out truphone, since I'm on the 2G touch?

I like the replies in twitterfon.

Now I know Discover and Air Sharing are blocked by my FON wireless access point...

one more question.

Do you sideload?

Would you rather use the appstore on the iPhone or organize your software in iTunes and sync on a regular basis?

What's sideload? You're going all technical on us again Eric! ;)

I'm happy to plug it into iTunes and let it all just happen. Not that interested in jailbreaking and tinkering around under the hood! :)

A good (but useless) app I just found is Bloom, by Brian Eno. It is a sort of ambient music generator. You touch the screen and it plays a note and sort of builds on it. Difficult to explain but it's pretty good.

I wish they'd fix the Facebook app. They updated it yesterday but now instead of everything being "19 hours ago" it's "32 seconds ago". Hello America, yes there are other timezones in the world! :P

@Dave - What was the name of the iPhone application you mentioned on show #14 which tells you about all of the newest apps?

I'm picking up my iPhone tomorrow night - w00t!

It is called AppSniper - works pretty good. There are just so many apps in the app store that I can't follow them all. But this app is great at "watching" applications for when they are on sale and you can snap them up. Not a bad app at all - just done an update that fixed all of the stability issues. Worth a look.
I have installed Facebook just to take a look at it. The thing that I like about it is that it allows me to do what I do through the web interface but a shitload easier. That new FB \web interface sucks for navigation - the iPhone app makes it as easy as pie. Since all's I do is replay to comments and crap like that it is perfect. But really good for the addict as well.
AppVee is a great review site for iPhone apps. I would say though that they are pretty funny with the selections of apps they review. But not bad if you want to actually "see" an app running and get a feel for if you want to spend the dollars.
Not that keen on the LastFm app. But what I am hanging out for is Skype integration into the iPhone ... not long now :) Seen a few solutions for that little trick...
Did I answer everyone?

sorry to drag up a dead thread but I want to throw my 2c in.

One app I didn't see anyone mention is "Classics" $1.19 but you get 20 Classic titles to read on your iPod touch/iPhone. Titles like Gullivers Travels and 20000 Leagues under the sea. Great for those that like to read.

"units" great FREE app to convert just about anything. eg. Liquid volume, Area, Speed, Data Storage and even some rough currency conversions. It is FANTASTIC considering it is free.

tap tap revenge 1 & 2, NIN version and Cold Play version. Very Very addictive. I have flattened the battery on my iPod touch a couple of times playing these.

iHandy Level. Works well as a spirit level but only in landscape mode.

Flashlight.  Not a great torch but will certainly do when nothing else is at hand.

I am however looking for a good NRL app. something similar to the AFL app Aussie Rules LIVE. If anyone finds one. Please let me know

I made a coworker get the v-Cockpit app. It looks awesome. It uses the tilt sensor and the GPS to replicate just about a complete set of cockpit flight instruments complete with black box flight recorder:

http://www.apptism.com/apps/v-cockpit-gps-lite

The trick to to put you iphone on the dashboard facing up against your windscreen. The reflection will give you a cockpit head-up display reflecting over your view on the road.
