In light of whatever I missed last month and the comments at the beginning of episode 10;

What's your favorite commercial software?

Divx Pro [ transcoding video for my E71. the only commercial software on my macs ]
Psiloc Xsync [ for backing up SMS/TXT to my gmail account ]
QuickOffice 5 Premier [ I can convert xlsx and work on spreadsheets on the run or take notes when out for my evening walk ]
Lonely Cat Games' X-plore 1.30 [ file manager and media player ]
MobileWays.de WirelessIRC [ mentioned a few times recently ]

Interesting question... looking at the stuff that's in my dock (that I therefore use the most), not a lot is paid.  I do have MS Office (but I was eligible for the student price!) and iLife, and apart from that a handful of $20 things...

Mail - comes with OSX

Safari - comes with OSX

Firefox - Free

Adium (IM client) - Free

iChat - comes with OSX

Calendar - comes with OSX

Address Book - comes with OSX

Evernote - Free

iTunes - Free

iRecord Music (supposed to be for recording audio streams from the internet, but I use it for playing streams over my airport express speakers) - Free, I think... or maybe you do have to pay, it's not much if you do.

iPhoto - PAID - part of iLife. Really simple photo organising and storage.

Word - PAID - part of Office 2008. I love to hate it but use it a lot. As I've grown up with it I find it easier to use than Pages (the Apple version) which I also have but rarely use. Lots of annoying things in the Mac version though - I hate it when Microsoft stuff tries to be helpful and corrects formatting etc. 9 times out of 10 it's done the exact opposite of what you want.

Excel - PAID - I also have Numbers (the Apple Version) but Excel is much more advanced. Really annoying that they've cut the macros out of Office 2008 for Mac though. :(

Remember the Milk - Actually this is a link to their website - I pay the pro subscription for it as it's the best To Do list / task manager I've used - and it's Aussie.

SuperDuper! - PAID. Disc backup/clone. This is probably the most vital piece of software I've got... It's saved me a couple of times - see my thread when my hard drive failed!

Adobe Creative Suites - all the graphics tools I need in one immensely expensive package!

And I mean IMMENSELY. At least by my standards. But it gives me absolutely everything I need.

I just got Lightroom 2... but it was a prize in a contest. Does that count?

And I buy Norton Antivirus (much to Dave's chagrin)...

But I prefer to use free stuff whenever possible!

My favourite software that I paid for but that I no longer use was Ability. This was an integrated office suite with a word processor, which was pretty good, a spreadsheet that was about as good as Lotus 123 and a database that made absolutely no sense at all.

Back in the days of DOS it was pretty radical to have all those functions in one piece of software and to be able to jump between them without having to start a new programme. My PC didn't have a hard disc so I ran it with Ability on one floppy disc and data on the other.

It sounds quaint now, but at the time I felt like I was on the bridge of the Enterprise.

I used to run my Amiga2000 with a 1 megabyte RAM disk and two 800k floppies... and they said I was crazy!

Well its either Pro Tools or Sibelius 5. I'm really hanging out for Pro Tools 8.

I really don't use many pieces of commercial software. There are usually free programs that will do the job just as well.
