Read it...

Only a fool runs through the Interwebs without some kind of protection.

Five years ago an Apple user might have been safe, but now you're just stupid to go without anti-virus.

I dont believe in protection.

Guess it's time for a checkup?

My 10.5.x users will only run clamav once a week, on their home directories. The cronjob will mail the report to me. So far it looks good.

The only collection of bugs I've found around our company was on the mothership's exchange server. The public folders where full of old things like mydoom.

Bah, Apple is just stirring the pot making sure that everyone is aware that they are security conscious.

The upshot is that there are *MAYBE* 5 viruses in the wild for Mac at any one time. In fact 2 of the viruses in the wild you actually have to INSTALL before they can affect you.

So I don't think its a needed step at the moment, Apple keep releasing security updates to plug the holes that old viruses and malicious code can use, and as long as they keep looking at issues (which they will) then there won't be a problem.

It all works basically like this...

Viruses in the PC world:

PC User#1 - WOW I JUST SPENT $4000 on the BIGGEST gaming rig EVAR!!! WHOO!!
PC User#2 - Oh nice, but you don't have to be a douche bag about it
PC User#1 - YES I DO CAUSE I HAVE THE RICHEZ!!!
PC User#2 - Gee thanks for that...

(meanwhile PC User#2 creates a virus to wipe out friends new PC)

PC User#2 - Hey dude here is a copy of Crysis:WarHead try that... hehehe...
PC User#1 - OH #$^@! YEAH!

(10 mins later)

PC USER#1 - WHAT THE #*$&Y#$&^$**#^*~! HAS HAPPENED!!! CRAP!
PC USER#2 - Wait, was that connected to the net?... oh dear...

Viruses in the Mac world:

Mac User#1 - Hey dude, just got the latest 30" iMac, its cool
Mac User#2 - Nice, I've gotta get something newer thats for sure.
Mac User#1 - Yeah it's pretty sweet...
Mac User#2 - Awesome, well back to editing my new video!

You see, Apples are expensive, people who buy them know this, and as such don't want to screw themselves or other Mac users over.

Its similar to the Linux world, lots of users all working to the common good, not trying to hurt other users.

PC's costing < $1000 is a good thing, but it also puts powerful machine in the hands of malicious people cheaply, that and all the scripters that use downloadable virus builders are worry.

So I say, nice one Apple, thanks for telling us that we should be wary, but the upshot of this is...

Business as usual...
