Last week's Tekzilla touched on the Comcast issue. HD shows on Revision3 consume about 1GB per hour [ heavily compressed ] according to the hosts.
When I mentioned this on the show I was thinking that if it did come in here that they would not be any where near as generous as 250GB. Just from past experience.
Well I am on a 100gb cap and I rarely hit and when I do it is only when there are a lot of good tv shows and the like to download, or downloading every UFC since the first one.
Apart from that I am lucky to get close to 100gb but I don't do an excessive amount of downloading on a regular basis. I am not sure a lot of people are streaming HD content anyway, you would need fat pipes to do that and I really don't think the US broadband market is up to scratch with it. Could be kids in colleges and stuff doing it on the T1 cables but even then I doubt it.
250gb seems like an awful lot to me tbh but then I am just one person who downloads stuff occasionally so if I downloaded more I might miss it. I really think the cap will only effect a small percentage of people but they have to have tools so people can monitor thei usag and I am unsure from what I have read and heard that they have that seup yet.
I know here I am several widgets and tools for OSX and when I boot to Vista that show my usage so it's not hard to do.
I agree 250GB is a ton at this point but there are 4 to 5 people at my place. The in-laws watch TV many hours a day. Who knows how much, but if this cap is the same in 5 years comcast users will be screwed. Comcast seems to be a "regional monopoly" in sense they get a contract with a county or city and there are no rules regarding sharing so no competitors. What happens in 5 years when we can stream 1080P? These are the same dirtbags throttling all BT traffic.
I'm glad Kevin Martin at the FCC is giving them a hard time.
comcast are only doing this because they are a cable tv provider.
Having phone and cable companies in charge of the infrastructure is crazy it should be taken out of their hands .
Here's a short video with some of the big players in the Australian internet business talking about net neutrality.
Thanks. I'll read that in the morning.
I promote piracy and online video b/c I work for a company that builds gear for telecoms and I really like having a job.
